Tutorial

A walkthrough of the Text page inside After Effects: picking a layer, choosing an animation or an effect, and retiming the result afterwards.
The Text walkthrough is being recorded. Until it is up, the 7-day trial has every feature on this page.
Auto captions
Generate any kind of auto caption.
This is the library: 92+ finished looks, from clean one-word captions to glowing script lockups. Every word lands on its own layer, timed to the voice.
92+ looks · one layer per word

Text › Auto captions › Quick styles
Pick a look from a wall of finished captions.
Quick styles shows every lockup on its final, fully revealed frame, so you judge the look rather than half an animation. 52+ caption lockups sit on shelves, beside 41+ classic styles.
Each lockup has a short set of simple controls, so small changes happen in the panel, not deep in the layer stack.

Text › Auto captions › Custom studio
Open any look and change every part of it.
The custom studio holds the font, colour, outline, glow, shadow, gradients and the way each word comes in.
Start from a quick style and keep going until it matches the brand you are cutting for.

Text › Auto captions › Layers
Every word is its own layer, with a marker to retime it.
Captions build one layer per word, under a null with size and pop sliders. Drag a word's marker to land it on the beat, or scale the whole block from the null.
Nothing is baked into a single text layer, so a late change to one word is a small job.
Text › Auto captions · Highlight look
Word by word, on the beat.
This is how a highlight look reads on screen: words land one at a time and the key word lights up. In your comp, each of those words is a layer with its own marker.
An illustration drawn in your browser. Hextion builds the real captions as layers in After Effects.
Text › Auto captions › Get the words
Words timed to the voice, from a key or a subtitle file.
Every spoken word arrives with its own timing, ready to build. Get the words with your own pay-as-you-go speech-to-text key (see what it needs), or import an SRT or VTT file for free, in any language.
A word editor lets you fix a name or a typo before anything is built, and you can caption one part of the timeline instead of the whole comp.
Text animations
Animate the text you already have.
40+ text animations, built in. By letter, word or line, in and out, on any text layer. Your font and colour stay as they were.
40+ animations · 6 groups
Text › Animations
Text animations that leave your styling alone.
40+ animations in six groups: Basic, Smooth, Pop, Bounce, Glow and Special. Apply one to any text layer and its font, colour and position stay exactly as you set them.
Choose In, In + Out or Out, split by letters, words or lines, and set speed, stagger and order before you apply. The timing sliders land in Effect Controls, so you can retime it later without starting over.
Text › Animations › Split by
One line, three ways in.
The same In animation, split by letters, by words or by lines. In Hextion it is one option you set before you apply, on any of the 40+ animations.
Type it once. Let it move.

Templates
Type your line. It arrives animated.
330+ animated text templates on shelves sorted by look, plus packs for the job in front of you. Preview them with your own words first.
330+ templates, including 16+ title lockups

Templates › Studio
See it with your words before it touches your comp.
The big preview plays the picked template with the line you typed. Choose In, In + Out or Out, pick a length, and set the accent colours.
Then press Add to comp, or Test comp to try it in a separate test comp first.

Templates › Add to comp
It lands as layers you can edit, not a locked render.
Templates build in your comp as normal layers, animated by words, letters or lines. Timing sliders wait in Effect Controls when you want to retime.
The fonts come with Hextion: 13+ open-licence families install with it, so a template looks right the first time you add it.

Templates › Shelves
Shelves sorted by what they look like.
Captions, story and social, glow, stacks, big words, titles and type, stickers and 3D, highlights and boxes, arcs and paths, cards and screens, calls to action, numbers and lists, kinetic, doodles and accents.
When you know the feel you want but not the template, start from the shelf.
Templates › Shelves and packs
Walk the shelves.
A few shelves and packs, captured from Hextion 1.0. Every card is shown on its final frame.

Templates › Packs
Packs for the job in front of you.
The other half of the library comes in topic packs: sport, food, podcast, real estate, travel, business, fashion, wedding, gaming and news.
Open the pack that matches the client, and the titles, numbers and calls to action already speak the same language.

Templates › Caption lockups
16+ title lockups for single lines.
Caption lockups for a hook, a quote or a key line, typed by hand. For captions across a whole talk, Auto captions does the same looks word by word.

Counters, type on a path and a character panel.
20+ text effects such as counters, clocks and typewriters, type that follows any curve, and a character panel where every number drags.

Text › Text effects
Counters, clocks and typewriters, ready to type into.
20+ text effects in four groups: Write on, Counters, Clocks and Loops. Typewriter and decode, slot machine, number, percent and currency counters, countdowns, a stopwatch, a live clock, a date roll, a text cycle and a blink.
These are the moments that used to mean looking up an expression: a price ticking up, a timer on screen, a word that keeps changing.

Text › On the path
Type that follows a curve, with its own camera.
Run a line along a wave, an arc, a smile, a swoop, a circle, a straight line or a path you draw yourself.
Type, Layout, Animate, Scene and Camera tabs set it up, move it along the path and tilt it in 3D, all on the layer you already have.

Text › Character
A character panel where every number drags.
Fonts listed in their own face, with size, tracking, fill and stroke. Every number is a drag scrubber, and holding Shift changes the step size, the way it does in After Effects.
There is a highlighter and a font replacer too, and every colour picker shows the colours you saved on the Color page.
